Midwives serve as the primary healthcare providers for women and their families, taking full responsibility for their care. They deliver care based on evidence and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams, working alongside obstetricians, GPs, health visitors, public health specialists, and maternity support staff. With a focus on public health, midwives address health disparities and enhance maternal and family wellbeing. Their training emphasizes natural childbirth while equipping them to manage complex medical, obstetric, and social needs. Midwives develop clinical expertise, empathy, and professional accountability, working autonomously yet collaboratively across healthcare teams. Their holistic approach centers on being 'with woman,' valuing continuity of care and the vital midwife-patient relationship in 21st-century practice. Key features include: NMC accreditation allowing UK and international registration (subject to local requirements); balanced theory-practice learning across NHS hospitals, community settings, and home births; comprehensive training meeting NMC standards for both routine and complex care; NIPE certification; hands-on experience in a student-led breastfeeding clinic supervised by qualified midwives; Unicef Baby Friendly accreditation for breastfeeding education; and global learning opportunities through DMU Global, with past placements in Amsterdam, Peru, and India. Career prospects include UK NMC registration with options to work in EU nations and Commonwealth countries like Canada and Australia (meeting local regulations).
