Carry out innovative clinical, applied, or fundamental research in vision science under the guidance of renowned experts at City, University London's Centre for Applied Vision Research. Our PhD program offers an ideal platform for optometrists seeking to incorporate academic pursuits into their professional practice, as well as for scientists from diverse backgrounds aiming to advance their careers in academia, industry, or public health sectors.
You'll conduct groundbreaking research with support from our multidisciplinary team of specialists working in: visual neuroscience, psychophysics, ocular optics and instrumentation, vision measurement techniques, and ophthalmic public health.
Opportunities may arise to explore the scientific basis behind various visual disorders (such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and color vision deficiencies) through our cutting-edge City Sight facilities and clinical partnerships, including collaborations with leading eye-care providers like Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Qualification Requirements

Entry requirements vary by subject area, so applicants should approach academic staff working in their area of interest to discuss their proposal ahead of, submitting an application. Applicants should preferably hold a Masters degree (with Distinction or Merit) in a relevant discipline and have past experience of research or professional expertise in their area of interest, with an upper second class honours degree or the equivalent from an international institution in a relevant discipline normally being a minimum requirement. Where an applicant's academic profile shows no evidence of training in research methods, it may be recommended that they first complete an MSc or MRes programme to prepare them for MPhil/PhD studies. For our Clinical MRes programme, applicants must be registered with a clinical professional group such as Medicine, Optometry or other Allied Health professions. For applicants whose first language is not English, an IELTS score of at least 7 (with a minimum of 7.0 in writing) is required. TOEFL: We require a well-balanced overall score of at least 100 and no less than 25 in the Writing section.
