This program emphasizes sustainable planning, design, and performance principles for large-scale and high-rise structures, equipping graduates with strong career prospects. While low and medium-rise building design has long considered climate factors and sustainability, high-rise developments—despite their global proliferation—are often viewed as massive energy consumers with limited sustainable considerations. The growing global emphasis on environmental responsibility highlights the importance of mega-structures. Our interdisciplinary curriculum centers on sustainable planning and design for such buildings, training students to become specialists in this field. You'll study in the School of Architecture's dedicated graduate studio at Friary House in central Cardiff, just 5-10 minutes from our Bute Building location.
Career opportunities - A global shortage exists for architects and built environment professionals specializing in sustainable mega-building design, creating increasing demand for graduates of this program. Alumni typically find positions with large-scale design firms, environmental consultancies, research centers, or establish their own practices. With growing public, governmental, and professional focus on this area, career prospects for specialists in sustainable mega-building design are expanding and becoming more appealing both in the UK and internationally.
