Become a specialist mental health nurse with our MSc in Mental Health Nursing.

Open to students from any academic background, this postgraduate degree equips you with the essential knowledge and skills to practise as a confident, capable, and compassionate mental health nurse. Upon successful completion, you will be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and begin your career as a registered mental health nurse.

Focusing on a person-centred approach, the course will help you develop into a reflective, creative, and effective practitioner. Through a blend of classroom learning and hands-on experience, you will build confidence in both academic and clinical environments.

Over the two-year programme, you will explore the theory underpinning mental health nursing whilst gaining valuable experience on placement. Working in diverse settings, including the home and community, you will apply your learning in real-life scenarios, deepening your understanding of how to support individuals with a range of mental health needs.

You will also benefit from access to our on-campus simulation suite, where you can practise your clinical and communication skills in a realistic, supportive setting before beginning your placements.

This course has been developed in collaboration with service users and experienced professionals, ensuring a holistic curriculum that reflects contemporary mental health care. Qualification Requirements

To be eligible for this course, you will hold a Bachelor's degree with Honours at a 2:1 in any subject or a 2:2 in a health related subject, such as Biological Sciences, Psychology or Public Health.

You must also hold maths and English GCSE grade 4-9 (A-C) or Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent.

Practice experience and theoretical learning.

Prior to beginning the course you will need to have undertaken 750 hours of practice experience and 500 hours of theoretical learning.

You will then need to submit a Recognition of Prior Experiential Learning (RPEL) application portfolio of evidence that documents the 750 hours of practice experience and 500 hours of theoretical learning, and includes a CV, record of application for Disclosure Barring Scheme (DBS) and occupational health clearance, and a supporting statement reflecting how these experiences have prepared you to undertake the MSc Nursing.

You will be supported in preparing this portfolio by a member of the MSc programme team. This portfolio will be assessed using a predefined criteria and once successfully completed you will be offered a firm place on the programme.
