Brunel's History department has developed a significant portfolio of innovative research spanning diverse areas including modern and contemporary history, with particular emphasis on the emergence and decline of empires, governments, nations, and states; the evolution of political ideologies; and warfare studies encompassing military history from ancient times to today, counterinsurgency operations, peace initiatives, and territorial disputes. Our research creates impact through collaborative partnerships with fellow academics, interactions with civil society organizations, and guidance provided to policymakers. The Politics and International Relations program at Brunel has cultivated an impressive collection of pioneering research across wide-ranging topics such as political philosophy with a focus on theories of upheaval and revolution; the governance systems of developed capitalist nations, particularly the UK, US, Asian nations, EU member states, and the European Union itself; intelligence and security studies concentrating on information collection methods; armed conflicts including historical military analysis from antiquity to present day, counterinsurgency strategies, conflict resolution, and boundary disputes; plus international affairs with expertise in Middle Eastern politics and interventionist policies.
