Beyond simply exploring past events, examining topics connected to major global occurrences, defense, security, intelligence, and strategy offers valuable insights while being highly sought-after by employers across these sectors and others in an increasingly complex world. A diverse selection of core modules introduces you to historical study at university level, regardless of whether you have prior qualifications in history. Foundational courses such as 'What is History,' which explores historians' methodologies and themes, and 'Total War in the Modern Era,' examining pivotal conflicts and their impacts, lay the groundwork for more specialized studies later in the program. In your second and third years, numerous optional modules allow you to explore your interests before undertaking a final-year project, with opportunities to study intelligence and security under guidance from experts at the University's prestigious Centre of Intelligence and Security Studies (BCISS). Throughout the program, you'll develop transferable skills in research, analysis, problem-solving, writing, and communication—valuable assets applicable across both public and private sectors. Choosing a placement year provides hands-on experience in a professional setting, helping demonstrate your potential to future employers. Your placement need not be history-related, and you'll receive comprehensive support from the University's Professional Development Center.
