Creating sportswear goes beyond visual appeal—it involves precise technical engineering to guarantee functionality and enhance the wearer's performance, whether they're scaling peaks, navigating a sailboat, or sprinting 100 meters. The MSc Sportswear Design program at BCU merges artistic vision with scientific principles, providing designers with both technical expertise and sports science understanding. As you delve into the sportswear industry, you'll examine practical, social, environmental, and economic considerations, pinpoint challenges, and seize opportunities for innovation. You'll master the craft of developing high-performance garments tailored to specific requirements, integrating sustainable and ethical approaches while redefining the expanding sportswear market. Backed by top sportswear brands and industry experts, you'll refine your design process from initial concepts to finished products, gaining insights into performance fabrics, construction methods, and sport-specific features and fit. With access to lab testing facilities and the Alexander Stadium, prototyping will become integral to your workflow. You'll assess data and fine-tune features and fit based on the demands of different sports, ensuring your creations are meticulously researched and purpose-built. Collaborations with industry partners will deepen your expertise in performance sportswear design and production. You'll also hone professional presentation and communication skills to boost career prospects. Field trips, connections with local sports communities, live industry projects, and work placements will expand your professional network. ### What's Covered in This Course The program begins with lectures, seminars, and workshops focused on essential research techniques, concept development, and ideation strategies. You'll learn to transform sport-specific user needs into functional yet stylish products. Guest lectures from industry specialists will offer insights into performance fabrics, industry benchmarks, and testing protocols for materials and garments. In the second semester, you'll deepen your expertise and refine your approach. Through a live industry project, you'll innovate within commercial constraints, sharpening your critical thinking, prototyping, and evaluation skills. Workshops on design thinking and circular design will embed sustainability into your practice, while industry discussions will expand your knowledge and confidence. A work placement opportunity will provide real-world experience, strengthening industry connections and employability. In your final semester, you'll showcase your creative and technical mastery through an independent, entrepreneurial project, applying everything you've learned.
Applicants are normally expected to have a minimum of a 2:2 honours degree, or equivalent, in Fashion Design or a related course. IELTS 6.0 overall with no less than 5.5 in each band, or equivalent. TOEFL iBT: 80 overall.
