Course IntroductionPublic history and heritage focuses on applying historical knowledge beyond academic settings through diverse approaches. Professionals in this field take on varied roles such as consultants, museum experts, archivists, preservation specialists, cultural resource managers, policy advisors, and community advocates. Their common goal is to make history meaningful, useful, educational, and engaging for the general public.Our MA in Public History and Heritage program explores fundamental concepts and challenges in the field. You'll develop both theoretical understanding and practical abilities to evaluate public history initiatives while gaining skills to develop your own projects. The program offers an optional work placement opportunity to gain direct experience within heritage institutions. Through examining real-world applications, you'll encounter diverse public history methods - from museum exhibitions and artifact interpretation to historical media productions and policy development. This program helps you understand:the broad spectrum of public history activitiesthe multiple functions historians serve in public domainsthe significant influence of public history on political, cultural, and social spheres.This qualification prepares students for careers in media, education, museums, publishing, and policy sectors. It also offers comprehensive historical training suitable for advanced personal research, professional development, or progression to MPhil/PhD studies.Classes are scheduled during evening hours.
The usual requirement is a second-class honours degree (2:2) or above in a humanities subject, as well as references. We may request writing samples or ask you to attend an interview, if you don't meet the entry criteria but have non-traditional educational or professional qualifications/experience. Applications are reviewed on their individual merits and your professional qualifications and/or relevant work experience will be taken into consideration positively. We actively support and encourage applications from mature learners. If English is not your first language or you have not previously studied in English, our usual requirement is the equivalent of an International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic Test) score of 6.5, with not less than 6.0 in each of the sub-tests. TOEFL: 79 (reading: 18, writing: 23, listening: 19, speaking: 19).
