Our BA Modern Languages program enables you to focus on one or two languages selected from French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish.
For single-language study, you'll typically need AS- or A-level proficiency (or equivalent) in your chosen language (except Japanese, which welcomes beginners). Your final degree title will reflect this specialization with options like:
BA French Studies
BA German Studies
BA Japanese Studies
BA Spanish and Latin American Studies
If you opt for two languages, you can combine beginner-level study in one with advanced study in another (A-level equivalent), helping you achieve near-native fluency in at least one language. Your degree title will include both languages, such as BA French and Spanish.
Regardless of your language choices, you'll enhance cultural awareness through modules covering literature, film, popular culture, visual arts, or linguistics. Comparative modules will let you examine cross-cultural themes across different linguistic and cultural settings.
You'll also develop valuable transferable skills including essay writing, oral presentations, report writing, critical analysis, logical reasoning, and translation.
