The BA in Classical Studies offers an in-depth examination of the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations, encompassing their culture, history, archaeology, philosophy, and literature. With diverse course options available, you can investigate Mediterranean and Near Eastern societies from the Archaic era through the Roman imperial age and into Late Antiquity, while also exploring how classical traditions influenced later historical periods.
This program fosters critical discussions about interpreting antiquity and its contemporary relevance. You'll examine both the commendable and controversial aspects of Greco-Roman societies, including:
democratic systems
institutions of slavery
cultural attitudes toward sexuality
imperial expansion.
A central focus involves analyzing how we understand the past and the construction of historical narratives. You'll evaluate ancient sources (both written and archaeological), challenge established historical interpretations, and hone your ability to formulate and articulate compelling arguments.
