Exceptional educators profoundly impact their students' lives. This teacher preparation program equips you to become a certified, enthusiastic Design and Technology instructor for secondary education. We foster the essential professional qualities that outstanding teachers possess, including: inspiring and motivating students in your subject area, dedication to inclusive education and student welfare, maintaining high personal and professional standards, and continuously reflecting on and improving your practice. Discover how to captivate and challenge learners in Design and Technology through teaching approaches that cultivate independent thinking and creative problem-solving, while harnessing the exciting potential of the subject. Specialized sessions will help you expand your subject expertise within real classroom contexts. We demonstrate techniques to foster enthusiasm for learning and guide students through design projects using materials, tools, and emerging technologies safely. Program structure: The full-time PGCE Secondary course spans one academic year and covers all subject areas. Your initial school placement starts with observation periods, where you'll watch your mentor teachers lead classes you'll eventually teach. You'll gradually take on lesson components before assuming full responsibility. You'll also study subject-specific curricula, school operations, and student progression. Throughout your training, you'll receive guidance from an Academic Tutor specializing in your field. This tutor supports your personal and professional growth while collaborating with your school mentors to provide comprehensive assistance. The PGCE Secondary experience culminates in developing your unique teaching identity. You'll design original teaching materials, establish your instructional style, and gain the confidence to make your subject engaging. During the program, you'll document and analyze your experiences to demonstrate your readiness for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Career prospects: Upon completing our PGCE with QTS recommendation, you can immediately begin your teaching journey. We provide application and interview preparation to launch your career successfully. As a newly qualified teacher, you'll receive two years of additional support from your employing school, paving the way for potential advancement to leadership positions like Department Head, Assistant Principal, or Headteacher, or specialized roles such as Year Group Coordinator.
In order to apply you'll need to have completed, or be in the final year of a UK degree (or an equivalent qualification). You're required to have a good honours degree or above in a subject that relates closely to one of the specialisms with Design and Technology.
A degree that relates reasonably well might also be acceptable if you already have good practical skills that cover the types of processes used in school.
You'll also need GCSE passes at grade 4/C or above (or recognised equivalents) in English and Mathematics.
