This Master's program in Zoology (Ornithology) is an extended undergraduate course that lets you earn either a BSc (Hons) after three years or a Master's degree upon completing the fourth year. Our program provides exceptional flexibility, ensuring your academic journey meets your needs. Birds serve as important model organisms in zoological studies and are increasingly central to conservation efforts due to many species' concerning population declines. The scientific community urgently requires experts with specialized avian knowledge and skills. This Zoology with Ornithology program equips you for a professional scientific career by blending classical zoology with focused studies on bird biology and diversity, alongside conservation management principles. You'll receive comprehensive zoological education with particular attention to both theoretical and practical animal studies, supplemented by specialized ornithological training. Throughout the program, you'll develop extensive laboratory and fieldwork competencies, both domestically and internationally, while gaining transferable scientific skills like data analysis, scientific communication, IT proficiency, and experience in both independent and collaborative work. The curriculum includes diverse Zoology modules spanning vertebrate and invertebrate studies, plus specialized coursework in the dynamic field of ornithology. The fourth-year MZool component features an extended research opportunity, either in lab settings or field environments. Past projects have investigated avian flight energetics, experimental studies of bird navigation, and behavioral ecology research on Welsh bird species in collaboration with local conservation groups. Options for Placement Years and International Experience Years are available.
