This MZool program in Zoology with Herpetology is an extended undergraduate course that provides the option to earn either a BSc (Hons) after three years or a Master's degree upon completing the fourth year. The final year includes an exceptional chance to pursue an in-depth research project, whether in laboratory settings or field environments. Reptiles and amphibians are gaining recognition as valuable model organisms across various zoological disciplines, captivating subjects for dedicated study, and increasingly important conservation priorities due to significant population declines. Consequently, there's a growing demand for skilled scientists with specialized expertise in these creatures alongside comprehensive zoological training. This specialized degree merges foundational zoology with focused studies on amphibian and reptile biology, diversity, and conservation strategies. Students can participate in a herpetological field expedition to Arizona during their second year and engage in outdoor studies across North Wales' natural landscapes. The program delivers a balanced education, blending thorough zoological foundations with specialized herpetological training. Participants gain extensive hands-on experience through both laboratory work and field studies, with fieldwork being a cornerstone of the curriculum. Additionally, students develop valuable transferable competencies including data interpretation, collaborative teamwork, effective presentation techniques, and digital literacy. As a recognized UK hub for herpetological research, our institution boasts dedicated faculty specializing in amphibians and reptiles. Beyond accessing state-of-the-art animal biology facilities, students benefit from our proximity to diverse natural ecosystems ideal for field research. Scientific innovation drives our research initiatives and directly informs our teaching content. Our specialists cover areas including animal distribution patterns, evolutionary processes, genetic population studies, ecological molecular research, and wildlife preservation strategies. Instruction comes from globally renowned herpetology experts, covering subjects from evolutionary biology and ecological systems to anatomical mechanics, classification methods, genetic research, venom studies, and serpent bite phenomena. Opportunities for placement years and international study experiences are available.
