The MSc by Research (MScRes) is a full-time, one-year program focused primarily on research, distinguishing it from traditional taught Master's degrees. Instead of coursework grading, assessment occurs through a viva voce (oral) examination, similar to a PhD process. This program develops advanced research capabilities, covering essential skills like literature review, ethical considerations, project management, grant applications, and data analysis. Graduates emerge prepared for PhD programs or direct entry into university and research institute positions.
During the initial three months, students refine their research proposals, complete comprehensive literature reviews, and present their plans to peers and supervisors. Constructive feedback helps strengthen both the project and final thesis. Participants also engage with training programs from the College of Natural Sciences Graduate School and University Doctoral School, developing both specialized and transferable postgraduate skills.
While funded projects may occasionally be advertised, prospective students can explore research opportunities year-round by contacting potential supervisors. The School Research pages provide details on academic specialties and staff contacts. Beyond robust research support, the School provides exceptional opportunities to work with world-renowned supervisors and benefits from strong connections with public and private sector organizations at local, national, and international levels.
Career Prospects
Postgraduate training not only provides specialized knowledge for specific roles but also enhances overall employability by demonstrating independent thinking, analytical abilities, and innovative problem-solving. Students cultivate professional competencies including effective communication, collaboration, and leadership while gaining practical experience. Alumni have pursued diverse careers in academic research, environmental consultancies, government agencies (like DEFRA), water authorities, scientific publishing, landscape architecture, and beyond.
