The Master of Science by Research (MScRes) is a full-time, one-year program focused primarily on research, distinguishing it from traditional taught Master's degrees. Unlike coursework-based programs, assessment occurs through an oral viva voce examination similar to a PhD evaluation. This program develops advanced research capabilities, covering essential skills like literature review, ethical considerations, project management, funding applications, and data analysis. Graduates gain qualifications suitable for pursuing doctoral studies or securing research roles in academic and scientific institutions. While specific funded opportunities may occasionally be advertised, prospective students can explore potential research directions with faculty members at any time. The School's research specialties and faculty contacts are available on our Research pages. Students receive exceptional research guidance from world-renowned supervisors and benefit from the School's extensive network of partnerships with public and private sector organizations.
Career Prospects
Beyond gaining specialized knowledge, postgraduate training enhances overall employability by demonstrating independent work ethic, analytical thinking, and innovative problem-solving. The program fosters professional development in communication, collaboration, and leadership while providing hands-on experience. Alumni have established careers in academic research, environmental consulting firms, government agencies like DEFRA, water management authorities, scientific journalism, landscape architecture firms, and various other fields.
