This Master's in Biology is an extended undergraduate program that enables students to earn either a BSc (Hons) after three years or a Master's degree upon completing the fourth year. If students meet the required standards by the end of Year 2, they can progress to the Master's year after finishing Year 3. The fourth year provides a distinctive chance to undertake an extended research project, whether in the lab or the field, while further honing skills and exploring interests. Biology encompasses all life on Earth, examining both the unity and diversity of organisms. In this degree, you'll study microbes, plants, and animals, gaining a solid foundation in cell and molecular biology, ecology, and evolution. You can also select modules from various disciplines, spanning topics from marine ecology to medical genetics. The program places strong emphasis on evolutionary, ecological, and environmental perspectives, allowing you to specialize in fundamental biological processes, theoretical developments, or applied biology—or maintain a broad focus by choosing modules aligned with your interests. Our degrees take advantage of the exceptional local terrestrial and aquatic habitats, as well as our botanical gardens and natural history museum, which enrich practical classes and field trips. Additionally, we collaborate with the Environment Centre Wales, a partnership between Bangor University and the Natural Environment Research Council’s Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (CEH). This collaboration, along with our faculty's diverse expertise, enables us to offer a wide array of biological modules and projects. This Biology degree delivers a strong foundation in plant and animal biology, from molecular processes to ecosystems. You'll gain hands-on experience in labs and fieldwork while developing transferable skills in data analysis, writing, presentations, IT, teamwork, and more. In Years 2 and 3, optional modules allow you to specialize in areas where Bangor researchers lead cutting-edge work—such as stress biology, energetics, adaptation, population genetics, biogeography, molecular ecology, climate change, genomics, microbiology, neurobiology, and development. You can also select modules from related fields like forestry, conservation, and human sciences, customizing your degree to match your interests. A placement year or international experience year is also available.
