Global wildlife populations have plummeted by almost 70% since 1970. Experts increasingly acknowledge that conservation strategies must become more impactful and precisely focused to help halt and eventually restore biodiversity loss. The field urgently requires conservation professionals with deep ecological understanding and awareness of the socioeconomic drivers behind successful conservation initiatives. Bangor University's new Wildlife Ecology and Conservation program builds upon decades of specialized research and teaching experience in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Students will develop comprehensive knowledge of interconnected ecological and conservation principles, with particular focus on land and marine environments. Key study areas encompass ecology and evolution, behavioral adaptation, science-based conservation approaches, human-wildlife interactions, and global conservation policies. Our unique location between the Menai Strait and Snowdonia National Park provides exceptional outdoor learning opportunities. Hands-on instruction occurs across diverse ecosystems (from coastal areas to mountain ranges) and conservation contexts (from zoological parks to protected reserves). Optional tropical conservation field courses leverage our longstanding international partnerships in these regions.Career ProspectsGraduates will acquire valuable practical competencies in laboratory and field work that employers highly prize, including: research design and execution, ethical data collection, statistical analysis, and clear scientific reporting. Students will learn to frame research questions effectively, select appropriate methodologies, and utilize scientific and social data to guide management decisions.Potential career paths include environmental management, ecological consulting, or conservation advisory roles in both terrestrial and aquatic settings worldwide. The program also prepares students for advanced academic research. The degree offers flexible study options - either a standard three-year track or a four-year version incorporating a professional placement with conservation organizations domestically or internationally.
