Our program places strong emphasis on evolutionary, ecological, and environmental studies, offering numerous opportunities to explore applied biology while understanding core biological principles and systems. Field courses and practical sessions utilize our exceptional local terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. What sets our curriculum apart is its comprehensive approach, covering whole organism biology alongside ecology, molecular sciences, cellular processes, and genetics. Biology encompasses all life on Earth, examining both the shared traits and diversity among organisms. Throughout this degree, you'll study microorganisms, plants, and animals while gaining solid foundations in cellular/molecular biology, ecological systems, and evolutionary theory. The program offers remarkable flexibility, with module choices spanning disciplines from marine ecosystems to medical genetics. While maintaining a strong focus on evolutionary and environmental life sciences, students can specialize in fundamental biological mechanisms, theoretical frameworks, or applied biology—or maintain a broad interdisciplinary approach. Our unique location provides access to diverse habitats, complemented by on-campus botanical gardens and a natural history museum for hands-on learning. As part of the Environment Centre Wales—a collaboration between Bangor University and the Natural Environment Research Council's Centre for Ecology & Hydrology—we offer an exceptional range of biological modules and research projects. This degree builds comprehensive knowledge of plant and animal biology across all scales, from molecular to global ecosystems. Students develop transferable skills through varied laboratory and field work, including data analysis, scientific communication, IT proficiency, and teamwork. In later years, specialized modules allow focus on cutting-edge research areas like stress biology, energy systems, adaptation mechanisms, genetic populations, biogeographic patterns, molecular ecology, climate impacts, cellular/genomic science, environmental microbiology, neural systems, and developmental processes. The program also permits cross-disciplinary studies in forestry, conservation, and human sciences, enabling students to craft a personalized educational pathway.
