J.R.R. Tolkien famously described Welsh as "the ancient tongue of this land, Britain's oldest living language, possessing remarkable beauty." As Wales evolves into a thriving bilingual nation, there's no better moment to explore the most lively Celtic language. Trace Welsh's journey from the medieval legends of the Mabinogion to today's diverse Welsh-language cultural scene. This four-year program caters to beginners and less confident speakers, starting with an intensive Foundation Year focused on language acquisition, followed by a comprehensive three-year BA in Welsh (second-language track). Instruction in Welsh progressively increases as your proficiency grows, with specialized modules helping learners transition into confident Welsh speakers holding a degree. No Welsh A-levels? No problem - we welcome various qualifications and life experiences, as Welsh studies suit learners from all walks of life. Absolute beginners can join, even without prior knowledge of the language. Pursuing a Welsh degree lets you immerse yourself in one of Europe's most vibrant literary traditions - the culture of Wales. You'll receive full support to engage with Welsh-speaking university life and local communities while examining Welsh in global contexts. We explore comparisons with languages like Basque and Irish, and how Welsh authors have addressed worldwide issues including slavery, the Holocaust, and modern ecological crises. Optional Placement Year and International Experience Year Available
