Exploring linguistics allows you to discover, comprehend, and analyze various facets of human communication. In this combined Linguistics and Modern Languages program, you'll examine the scientific foundations of language, covering speech sounds and their patterns (phonetics and phonology), word formation (morphology), sentence structure (syntax), meaning (semantics and pragmatics), social influences on language (sociolinguistics), and historical language evolution. The curriculum also addresses language learning and usage. As part of this dual-degree program, you'll cultivate advanced proficiency in a modern language while gaining specialized knowledge about its associated cultures, societies, and histories. Linguistics investigates language mechanics, examining how people acquire, process, and employ communication systems. This field combines theoretical exploration with practical applications like language technology development, educational policies, and linguistic planning. The program further examines grammatical similarities and differences across languages, the relationship between society and communication, and the global roles and perceptions of various languages. Modern language studies equip you with practical linguistic abilities while offering insights into the cultural, historical, and social contexts of global language communities. Beyond classroom instruction, numerous extracurricular opportunities exist to enhance your language capabilities and intercultural understanding. Optional Placement Year and International Experience Year Career Prospects A Linguistics and Modern Languages degree delivers specialized knowledge while cultivating transferable skills sought by employers. These include analytical reasoning, research capabilities, project coordination, diverse presentation methods (written, digital, and oral), problem-solving, independent work ethic, time management, teamwork, technical proficiency, and effective interpersonal communication. Modern language graduates pursue diverse career paths, including education and translation. However, this qualification also leads to opportunities in government service, business sectors, industry, and media. The competencies developed through language studies—cultural sensitivity, precise communication, strategic planning, and logical reasoning—are highly valued across numerous professional fields.
