Our doctoral program fosters independent, practice-based research initiatives that investigate elements of children's book illustration through advanced creative work. We seek project proposals grounded in personal artistic practice that aim to analyze specific facets of children's book illustration using both creative and theoretical approaches. By employing your own artistic practice as a research methodology, you'll make unique contributions to this expanding field of knowledge. Your specialized studies will be complemented by university-wide training workshops, where you'll develop crucial research skills in areas such as ethics, presentation techniques, intellectual property rights, and digital research methods. Numerous exhibition and conference opportunities will also be available to you.
As part of Cambridge School of Art, you'll join a dynamic and expanding community of doctoral researchers. We offer multiple research forums that highlight the collaborative and cross-disciplinary nature of academic inquiry, including research groups hosting regular seminars and casual presentations for graduate researchers, along with the Centre for Children's Book Studies. You'll leverage our robust connections with children's publishing houses, the Bologna Children's Book Fair, Kettle's Yard, and Cambridge University's research centers including CRASSH (Centre for Research in Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities) and the Faculty of Education's Centre for Children's Literature.
