Our doctoral programs in research enable you to collaborate on existing projects or pursue your own graphic design and typography interests with guidance from our expert faculty. Grounded in your specific field, you'll situate your work within contemporary critical discussions, analyzing current production and distribution approaches used globally. Your investigation can be practice-based, primarily utilizing design projects as research methodology.
You'll receive guidance from two primary supervisors, with access to additional faculty support when needed. Our advisors possess expertise across most graphic design and typography domains, particularly specializing in type design and historical development. As part of Cambridge School of Art, you'll join a dynamic, expanding research community spanning diverse disciplines. We offer multiple research platforms highlighting our interdisciplinary approach, such as the Typographic Research Group, and maintain strong connections with professional organizations including Atypi, Typographic Research Initiative, Typecon (USA), along with various academic and industry publications. Opportunities exist to engage in publishing, exhibitions, and conferences, allowing you to develop essential research skills while enriching the intellectual environment at Cambridge School of Art.
