Our doctoral research programs enable you to participate in existing research initiatives or pursue your own academic interests in English Literature, guided by our expert faculty. You'll be assigned two primary supervisors, with access to additional advisors when needed. Our supervisory team possesses extensive knowledge across diverse areas of English literature, with particular strengths in Renaissance studies, Shakespearean scholarship, Romantic and Victorian periods, modernist works, feminist literature, science and creativity, classical influences, performance arts, and contemporary culture.
You'll pursue your research within an interdisciplinary setting that fosters collaboration, maintaining strong connections with academic networks both within our institution and beyond. We organize and participate in numerous scholarly events for faculty and graduate students, including regular departmental seminars, global conferences, and the biennial Skinner Young lecture focusing on Shakespeare and Renaissance studies. Our seminar series provides opportunities to present your work in an encouraging atmosphere, and you may also attend graduate research sessions at Cambridge University's English Faculty.
These academic gatherings, complemented by our digital platforms, facilitate networking with fellow researchers across various disciplines. Financial assistance may be available - we dedicate significant annual funding to support postgraduate conference attendance and research travel, along with select scholarships. Your specialized studies will be complemented by university-wide training workshops, where you'll develop essential research skills in areas including research ethics, academic presentations, copyright considerations, and digital humanities methodologies.
