In this program, you'll examine the forces that mold societies and personal experiences, the connections that bind people, communities, and institutions together, as well as the divisions that separate them.
As a BA (Hons) Sociology student at ARU, you'll study foundational thinkers like Weber and Marx while investigating modern challenges such as individualism and digital connectivity, exploring their influence on human actions.
You'll have opportunities to focus on specialized topics that captivate you—from substance use in societies to cybercrime, social regulation, sports, or human-environment relationships—through our diverse elective courses. ARU fosters a collaborative environment where faculty and peers support one another. During your sociology degree, you'll learn from experts specializing in social policy and theory who research varied sociological themes including racial and ethnic studies, urban sociology, deviance, sports sociology, identity and belonging, governance, ethical regulation, cultural perceptions of alcohol, gender violence, equity, and marginalized community dynamics.
Additionally, you'll gain career-ready skills by undertaking fieldwork in communities or workplaces, acquiring hands-on experience with diverse approaches to societal challenges. You'll explore applying this knowledge by developing, presenting, and assessing initiatives that could benefit society. An optional placement year is available, potentially in government agencies, NGOs, charities, or social enterprises—tailored to your professional aspirations.
