This represents a possible research degree field, pending University approval. Those interested in pursuing research in this area should contact the Dean to discuss their proposal.
Abertay's Sport and Exercise Sciences Division specializes in women's sports equality, health risks of inactive lifestyles, exercise and wellness programs, high-intensity training, competitive athletic performance, and healthy aging. Much of this research concentrates on groups with protected characteristics (such as age, gender, disability) and seeks to advance duty of care initiatives, an increasingly important concern in modern sports. This aligns with our collaborations with Police Scotland, Active Schools, sports governing bodies, nonprofit organizations, and small-to-medium enterprises.
The Division features two specialized human performance labs for physiological assessment, along with dedicated strength/conditioning and biomechanics laboratories to support both education and research. These facilities provide EMG and ECG devices, ergometers, biofeedback systems, motion sensors, force measurement tools, precision timing equipment, gas/blood analyzers, galvanic skin response instruments, BioHarness monitoring, Vicon motion capture technology, force plates, jump analysis mats, body composition scanners, and position tracking systems.
Collaboration with other departments grants access to advanced biochemical and molecular physiology equipment, plus opportunities to study realistic movement patterns through partnerships with game design specialists.
Abertay researchers maintain performance collaborations with organizations including Scottish Rugby Union, Dundee United FC, Dundee FC, and Fife Flyers Ice Hockey team, creating numerous innovative research possibilities.
Our research initiatives equip students for successful academic careers while also providing pathways to diverse professional opportunities beyond academia.
