This represents a possible research degree field, pending University approval. Those considering pursuing a research degree in this discipline should consult with the Dean to review their proposed study.

Abertay's Sport and Exercise Sciences Department specializes in gender equity in sports, health risks of inactive lifestyles, exercise-based health interventions, high-intensity training, athletic performance optimization, and wellness in aging populations. Much of this research concentrates on groups with protected characteristics (such as age, gender, or disability) and seeks to advance duty of care initiatives - an increasingly important concern in modern sports. This aligns with our collaborations with Police Scotland, Active Schools, sports governing bodies, nonprofit organizations, and small-to-medium enterprises.

The Department operates two specialized human performance labs for physiological assessment, plus dedicated strength/conditioning and biomechanics laboratories to facilitate both teaching and research. These facilities provide EMG and ECG technology, ergometers, biofeedback systems, motion sensors, force measurement devices, precision timing systems, gas/blood analyzers, galvanic skin response equipment, BioHarness monitoring, Vicon 3D motion capture, force plates, jump analysis mats, body composition scanners, and linear position trackers.

Collaboration with other departments grants access to advanced biochemical and molecular physiology instruments, along with opportunities to study realistic human movement through partnerships with game design specialists.

Abertay researchers maintain performance partnerships with organizations including Scottish Rugby Union, Dundee United FC, Dundee FC, and Fife Flyers Ice Hockey team - collaborations that continue to yield innovative research prospects.

Our research programs equip graduates for successful academic careers while also creating pathways to diverse professional opportunities beyond academia.
