This represents a possible field for research degrees, pending University approval. Prospective students interested in pursuing research in this discipline should consult with the Dean to review their proposed study plan.

The postgraduate environment in Sociology focuses on students pursuing an MA by Research, MPhil, or PhD. As part of Abertay's research community, you'll work alongside experts from various fields. Our institution has played a significant role in major European funding initiatives that investigate the relationship between technology, societal change, and innovative social solutions, along with studying how social networks facilitate collective understanding.

Faculty members have guided numerous research initiatives, many involving partnerships with non-academic organizations in areas such as:

Policy sociology - examining health systems, educational frameworks, youth development, environmental issues, policy formation, community engagement, and professional standards.

Criminal justice - working with law enforcement and judicial system stakeholders.

Creative industries - focusing on digital design methodologies, media educators, artists, and exhibition organizers.

The MPhil program typically requires 2 years of full-time study

We maintain collaborative relationships with criminal justice experts via the Scottish Institute for Policing Research (SIPR), computing specialists through the Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (SICSA), and media educators via the Association for Media Education in Scotland (AMES).

Our research degrees equip graduates for successful academic careers while also creating pathways to diverse professional opportunities beyond academia, including policy development roles.
