The Bachelor of Health Science (Paramedic) is a full-time three-year degree, offered in partnership with Wellington Free Ambulance (WFA), structured to equip graduates for paramedic roles.
Paramedics deliver critical and time-sensitive healthcare services by applying specialized professional knowledge, operating in unpredictable settings. Through clinical evaluations, advanced interventions, and therapeutic measures, they stabilize patients in demanding conditions, coordinate with primary and secondary care providers, and ensure continuous emergency treatment during patient transport.
The BHSc (Paramedic) curriculum blends theoretical instruction, independent study, practical simulations, and clinical rotations. The demanding nature of the program requires significant academic commitment, and students should carefully consider any employment obligations that might compromise study time or clinical attendance. Working more than ten weekly hours is generally discouraged.
A distance learning option is available for current paramedics in professional or volunteer roles. The Flexible Learning Stream (FLS) of this degree caters to students holding a National Certificate/Diploma in Ambulance Practice (Level 5) or those currently practicing as EMTs or paramedics.
