This program offers postgraduate education aimed at advancing both professional and academic careers. Participants will engage in a research-oriented setting, expanding their expertise through focused study in their selected discipline. Students will enhance their professional scope by conducting extensive, independent research. This thorough exploration focuses on the student's chosen field of communication, design, music, or visual arts within a research-driven academic environment. The curriculum equips students for advanced analysis and contributions to their academic or professional domain. Master's candidates receive guidance for both practical and theoretical aspects of their work. Additional support is available from external professionals in the student's field and/or for those incorporating Kaupapa Māori methodologies into their research. Regular formal and informal sessions with faculty and peers facilitate discussion, critique, and refinement of research practices. The learning atmosphere is collaborative, dynamic, and inclusive, valuing contributions from all participants. Media Arts resources are accessible based on project needs, with master's students receiving individual studios, fabrication workshops, and professional-grade digital workspaces. Dedicated testing areas, exhibition spaces, and tutorial rooms support both structured classes and informal work reviews. Technical staff oversee facilities and equipment, assisting students with practical and organizational aspects of their projects.
The Master of Arts degree opens doors to advanced academic pursuits or careers in the arts, including roles like Professional Artist, Musician, Sound Designer, Composer, Songwriter, Filmmaker, Digital Designer, Educator, Advertising Creative, Interactive Designer, Copywriter, Freelance Journalist, Events Coordinator, Marketing Communications Specialist, Public Relations Professional, or Teacher. Graduates may also pursue doctoral studies in their field.
Candidates may be required to study a pre-requisite module in Research Methodology prior to admission should they not be able to demonstrate having acquired research skills to the appropriate level.
Candidates who have English as a second language are required to have an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of 6.5, with no individual band score lower than 6.0; or TOEFL Internet-based test (iBT) score of 79 (with a writing score of 21); TOEFL Paper-based Test (pBT) score of 590 (with an essay score of 5.5 TWE); Pearson Test of English (Academic) score of 58 with no band score lower than 50
