Physics explores and applies principles that help us understand and predict how our universe behaves. This encompasses everything from planetary orbits and atomic quantum leaps to how light travels. By examining core ideas like energy, force, particles, and waves, Physics seeks to uncover nature's deepest mysteries while also solving practical technological challenges.
Discovering how our physical reality functions is both captivating and valuable. Studying Physics sharpens your reasoning skills, cultivating advanced analytical and problem-solving abilities. At Otago's Physics department, you'll learn alongside New Zealand's leading physicists. Our research-driven teaching covers diverse specialties including geophysics, optics, energy science, atomic physics, electronics, and quantum theory.
A Physics degree from Otago opens numerous career pathways. You could enter cutting-edge fields like electronics, laser technology, advanced materials, healthcare analytics, or telecommunications.
You might join a company developing innovative products, using your expertise to tackle real-world physical challenges. Pairing Physics with another discipline could lead to specialized roles. For instance, combining acoustics-focused Physics with music studies might lead to a career as an acoustic consultant for architectural firms.
Career options include medical physics, working with radiotherapy or phototherapy technologies in healthcare settings, potentially improving public health programs. For those pursuing research, opportunities exist in atomic physics, laser studies, or energy solutions.
You could conduct Antarctic wave research on sea ice dynamics, working for universities, research centers, or specialized physics firms. With experience, you might become a sought-after technical consultant.
Global organizations frequently hire consultants for specialized projects, offering diverse work and international travel prospects. Physics educators are highly sought after worldwide, with particular demand for advanced secondary school teachers. Physics teaching qualifications make you an attractive candidate in the job market.
