Statisticians serve as data detectives, uncovering insights within information. They gather, process, and make sense of data to assist scientists and policymakers. One of the most fulfilling aspects of statistics is its inherently collaborative nature. These professionals also plan and conduct investigations, drawing upon their computational expertise, numerical proficiency, analytical thinking, and communication abilities. At Otago University, the Statistics Group focuses on diverse areas including ecological studies, biological data analysis, health statistics, genetic quantification, and challenges like epidemic modeling and geological risk assessment.
Wherever data is gathered, processed, or explained, you'll encounter individuals with statistical expertise. As society grows increasingly data-driven, the need for qualified graduates exceeds availability. Using their technical skills, statistical understanding, numerical capabilities, and communication talents, statisticians guide decisions amid uncertainty. Their work spans assessing environmental impacts of pollution to designing clinical trials for new medical treatments. A career in statistics allows you to merge your passion with virtually any scientific, technological, or commercial discipline.
In New Zealand, statisticians find opportunities at Crown Research Institutes, government agencies like IRD, ACC, and DOC, as well as corporations including Fonterra, Meridian Energy, and Spark.
