Theater delves into and portrays human experiences and creativity through vibrant, engaging, and meaningful performances. Studying Theater cultivates essential abilities like confidence, collaboration, effective communication, and artistic innovation, while also allowing you to step into perspectives vastly different from your own. Rooted in the diverse traditions of global theater across history, Otago's Theater Studies program blends hands-on practice with scholarly exploration, equipping you for diverse career paths both within and beyond the performing arts.
Graduates of Theater Studies pursue roles as performers, directors, promoters, screenwriters, broadcast journalists, filmmakers, comedians, designers, educators, musicians, and stage technicians. Others enter fields like arts management, advertising, or marketing, or pursue specialized training in theater-related areas. Many opt to pair Theater Studies with complementary subjects (such as English, Music, Dance, Anthropology, Film & Media, Psychology, Māori Studies, and others) or combine it with degrees like Law, Marketing, or Education. Theater courses develop versatile professional and personal competencies—critical thinking, research, creative problem-solving, leadership, and adaptable communication—that are prized across industries. These skills foster both career success and lifelong growth, alongside cultural awareness and independent thinking.
