The Master of Arts (MA) in Peace and Conflict Studies and Master of Peace and Conflict Studies (MPCS) are interdisciplinary programs offering advanced training in peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and development. These programs examine the root causes of violence and warfare across local, national, and global contexts, exploring strategies for prevention, management, and peaceful transformation. The curriculum tackles issues of maintaining harmony in Aotearoa New Zealand's multicultural society while situating these discussions within New Zealand's regional relationships in the South West Pacific and East/Southeast Asia. The Center integrates theoretical knowledge with practical application, allowing students to specialize in either research-oriented or practitioner-focused career paths. Both the MA and MPCS combine strong theoretical foundations with policy-relevant, hands-on learning, featuring opportunities for independent research and collaborative problem-solving. Students will develop expertise in theoretical frameworks, research methodologies, ethical practices, analytical techniques, intervention strategies, data gathering, evidence-based evaluation, and academic writing within peace and conflict studies.

Qualification Requirements

Admission to the programme shall be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities).
Applicants seeking admission to a programme of study comprising of papers and a thesis (240 points combined) must either
be a graduate with an average grade of at least B+ for the appropriate 300-level papers, or
have alternative qualifications or experience acceptable to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities).
Applicants seeking admission to the programme of study comprising the 120-point thesis only on the basis of completing the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours or the Postgraduate Diploma in Arts Subjects or equivalent must:
have undertaken a programme of study that provides adequate preparation for the thesis, and
have achieved a grade of at least a B+ for the research report, thesis preparation, dissertation requirement, or relevant preparatory papers of the qualification concerned.
In considering an applicant's qualifications, regard will be had to the detail of the course of study followed to gain the qualification, as well as the applicant's performance in the programme. Applicants must normally have achieved an average grade of at least B+ in the papers at the highest level in the programme.

IELTS (Academic) - Overall score of 6.5, no individual band below 6.0.
TOEFL iBT - Overall score of 90 and a writing score of 21.
