As one of New Zealand's key economic partners and among the globe's most prosperous markets, Japan makes proficiency in its language and culture a valuable asset for employment both locally and internationally. Organizations ranging from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade to educational institutions, tourism sectors, research centers, legal practices, translation services, and numerous New Zealand enterprises engaging with Japan seek graduates who possess not just Japanese language skills but also cultural understanding to effectively engage with Japanese counterparts. On a personal level, immersing yourself in Japanese language and cultural studies offers profound enrichment. Whether your passion lies in anime, Zen practices, Haruki Murakami's literature, Hayao Miyazaki's cinema, Japan's culinary artistry, Tokyo's fashion scene, or traditional arts like ikebana, rock gardening, martial arts, or tea ceremonies, Japanese culture presents endless avenues for intellectual and spiritual growth that will last a lifetime.
Japanese majors enjoy diverse career pathways. Some pursue international relations, trade, business, or tourism, while others follow academic routes like teaching Japanese in New Zealand schools or pursuing advanced degrees at Otago or other institutions. Several alumni have participated in Japan's JET Programme, serving as language teaching assistants in Japanese schools or international relations coordinators for municipal governments.
