Linguistics represents the methodical scientific exploration of human language. As a phenomenon likely exclusive to humanity, language has captivated people across generations. You've likely pondered it yourself. This field directly examines language's nature, the similarities and differences between languages, their evolution, functionality, and methods of instruction and acquisition. Since language permeates our daily activities, investigating its essence and mechanisms offers valuable perspectives on routine existence. It proves both practical and fulfilling for enthusiasts of all language varieties - from programming and constructed languages to those focused on second language education.
The study of linguistics proves valuable in all domains where communication matters - which encompasses virtually everything. It holds particular relevance for language instruction, interpretation/translation, publishing, software development, and speech pathology. Alumni have pursued careers as government officials, legal professionals, content creators, journalists, filmmakers, language specialists, speech therapists, and educators. The TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) minor specifically prepares students for English instruction roles internationally and domestically within private language institutions.
