The Asian Studies program offers an interdisciplinary approach to understanding Asian societies, their traditions, values, and belief systems. Recognized as a field of research excellence at the University of Otago, our faculty not only teaches Asian Studies but also engages in both individual and collaborative research projects within the university and with other institutions. Students can incorporate Asian Studies courses into a Global Studies major.
Career prospects
Knowledge of Asian cultures creates diverse career possibilities in international and domestic settings across private industries, public organizations, and government agencies.
The Diploma for Graduates (DipGrad) serves multiple purposes and can sometimes function as an additional specialization. This program requires completion of at least seven courses, with a minimum of four at the 300-level or higher. Designed for degree holders, it can be completed in one year of full-time study or extended over multiple years for part-time students.
The DipGrad provides an excellent opportunity for professional retraining or skill enhancement. Many students find it an accessible pathway to continue their education and a valuable stepping stone toward postgraduate studies.
