Dental Technology represents the technical aspect of dentistry, where skilled technicians create customized prosthetics and devices for the head and neck based on dentists' prescriptions. These may include: artificial teeth solutions like full or partial dentures, crowns, bridges, and implant-supported dentures crafted from materials such as acrylics, metals, and ceramics; removable orthodontic devices featuring springs and retainers embedded in acrylic bases to reposition teeth; protective sports mouthguards; and maxillofacial prosthetics including artificial eyes, ears, and facial reconstructions needed post-surgery. Unlike dentists, dental technicians work exclusively in laboratory settings without patient interaction. They combine scientific knowledge of dental materials with artistic precision to recreate natural-looking teeth and facial features, impacting both health and aesthetics. Given the significant consequences of their work, dental technology is a regulated profession under New Zealand's Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2004. Holders of the Bachelor of Dental Technology (BDentTech) degree gain automatic registration with the New Zealand Dental Technicians Board.
