The Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) program equips students to tackle global challenges by integrating philosophy's analytical thinking, political science's societal understanding, and economics' systematic approach. The curriculum covers demanding studies in logic, ethics, group dynamics, human psychology, governance theories, economic principles, and intellectual history. Otago's PPE students undertake intensive coursework across these three foundational areas, supplemented by cross-disciplinary discussions and independent research projects.
Philosophy, politics, and economics share inherent connections and historical foundations. Economic theory evolved from political economy, welfare economics incorporates philosophical notions of fairness, while scientific philosophy influences research methods used in both economics and political science.
PPE alumni leverage their problem-solving abilities across diverse sectors: recent graduates have pursued careers in international relations, media, legal practice, organizational leadership, higher education, corporate management, startups, financial services, and public policy development.
PPE degree holders work across various industries including media production, hospitality services, and tech sectors; those in public service hold positions at the highest judicial levels and within key government departments such as Environmental Protection, Finance, Community Services, and Taxation authorities.
