Harmful health behaviors are prevalent in our communities – including smoking, excessive drinking, poor nutrition, and physical inactivity – while many chronic illnesses like diabetes necessitate lifestyle modifications as part of treatment. Altering these behaviors often proves challenging, demanding sustained effort, time, and strong motivation.
Motivational interviewing (MI) offers a cooperative dialogue approach to enhance an individual's personal drive and dedication to change. Studies indicate that with proper training, various healthcare professionals can employ MI to help modify addictive and unhealthy habits. This health behavior modification initiative could substantially enhance the skills of healthcare workers, aligning with key goals of Aotearoa New Zealand's Health and Disability strategies.
The Health Behavior Change specialization within the Postgraduate Diploma of Health Sciences, Master of Health Sciences, and Master of Health Sciences Professional Practice equips students with the expertise to pursue careers or assume leadership roles in Health Behavior Change both in Aotearoa New Zealand and globally.
