The Master of Teaching and Learning (MTchgLn) serves as a foundational qualification for aspiring educators. This program offers an excellent opportunity for degree holders pursuing careers in primary or secondary education while aiming to stand out with an advanced academic credential.
This specialized Master's degree provides comprehensive training in research-based knowledge, inquiry techniques, modern educational theories, and hands-on teaching experience to prepare educators for today's school environments. It's particularly suited for individuals passionate about inclusive education, focusing on supporting diverse student populations such as Māori and Pasifika youth, English language learners, and students with unique educational requirements within regular school settings.
Applicants for the MTchgLn programme need a degree in a disciplinary field appropriate to teaching and learning in Aotearoa New Zealand, with either:
a bachelor’s degree or a bachelor’s degree with honours with a B Grade Point Average or better
a master's degree
approval of successful prior academic performance that demonstrates an ability for postgraduate-level study.
For the Secondary endorsement, students will need a body of knowledge from their previous studies in a subject relevant to the Aotearoa New Zealand secondary school curriculum eg, English, physics, geography, etc.
Students who completed their entry qualification overseas, and who intend to become registered teachers in Aotearoa, are advised that Matat? Aotearoa will require an assessment of their qualification by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
Applicants must also satisfy our English language entry requirements:
IELTS (Academic): Listening: 7.0, Reading: 7.0, Writing: 7.0, Speaking: 7.0, OVERALL, MARK (in one test): 7.0.
TOEFL (IBT): Listening: 24, Reading: 24, Writing: 27, Speaking: 23, OVERALL, MARK (in one test): 98 minimum.
PTE (Pearson Test of English - Academic): Listening: 65, Reading: 65, Writing: 65, Speaking: 65, OVERALL, MARK (in one test): 65.
Cambridge English exams C2 Proficiency (CPE) or C1 Advanced (CAE) or Cambridge English exams: Listening: 185 minimum, Reading: 185 minimum, Writing: 185 minimum, Speaking: 185 minimum. OVERALL, MARK (in one test): 185 minimum
