This 180-point Master's program provides advanced study in linguistic analysis with a strong research focus. Students pursuing a Master of Linguistics (MLing) will examine how language interacts with society. Within Aotearoa New Zealand, this involves exploring the evolution of English, its ongoing transformation as a symbol of New Zealand identity, and the historical and current connections between English and te reo Maori.

Those who complete the Linguistics Master's program will gain expertise in modern linguistic theories and methods, along with diverse analytical, critical, and language-related abilities.

Linguistics Master's graduates will develop proficiency in:

language structure, covering phonetics, phonology, and syntax
connections between English and other languages, particularly te reo Maori

Qualification Requirements

Applicants for this degree need to have either:
a bachelor's degree with a major in Linguistics, with at least a B+ Grade Point Average in 60 points in Linguistics at 300-level, or
any bachelor's degree, and a Graduate Diploma in Arts in Linguistics, with at least a B+ Grade Point Average in 60 points in Linguistics at 300-level, or
a bachelor's degree with a major in Psychology, Sociology, Anthropology, Philosophy, Computer Science, a language, or a different major approved by the Head of Department of Linguistics, with at least a B+ Grade Point Average in 60 points of 300-level courses in the majoring subject, and achieved at least a B+ in LING400 English Structures (a distance-learning course which runs over the summer), or
other approved qualifications of an equivalent standard.

IELTS: An average score of 6.5, with a minimum of 6.0 in reading, writing, listening and speaking
TOEFL iBT :Total minimum score of 90, minimum score of 19 in reading, writing and listening
