The Bachelor of Optometry (BOptom) holds accreditation from the Optometry Council of Australia and New Zealand. This degree program helps cultivate essential skills like communication, empathy, and problem-solving, with a focus on serving children, older adults, and those with visual impairments. It prepares graduates for optometry registration, equipping them to identify vision issues, recommend preventive measures, and provide treatments. The curriculum combines theoretical knowledge with clinical training, ensuring graduates are job-ready. Admission to the BOptom program is highly competitive, with selection based on academic performance and personal qualities demonstrated during the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI). Only 60 spots are offered annually. Upon completion, graduates qualify as registered optometrists authorized to diagnose and manage eye conditions in both New Zealand and Australia. Most optometrists establish private practices, enjoying flexible schedules and location choices, while others pursue careers in hospitals, clinics, research, or industry. Please note that the University of Auckland does not facilitate graduate employment and cannot assure professional registration or job opportunities in New Zealand or elsewhere.
