For primary education, you can select either our English or Huarahi Māori pathways. Our program provides the essential skills for teaching in modern classrooms that value strong connections, embrace diversity, and prioritize digital learning. Grounded in equity and social justice, the curriculum is guided by Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and a dedication to fair educational outcomes. You'll study with diverse peers while developing foundational te reo Māori skills, learning from education specialists passionate about nurturing future educators. Instruction combines in-person lectures, tutorials, workshops, and online components. Throughout the three-year program, you'll complete full-time practicums in various schools or kura, mentored by experienced teachers and university supervisors. This experience helps you integrate into educational communities, build professional networks, and develop crucial teaching competencies.
For fluent te reo Māori speakers, the Huarahi Māori specialization prepares you for teaching in Māori-medium education (including Kura Kaupapa Māori, Kura ā iwi, and immersion/bilingual programs), as well as English-medium primary schools. With nationwide demand for Māori language teachers in bilingual settings, graduates are highly sought-after. The program maintains its foundation in equity and social justice, aligned with Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles to promote fair learning opportunities. This qualification positions you as a leader in Māori education with comprehensive knowledge across multiple disciplines.
