New Zealand students now have the opportunity to pursue maritime engineering studies through a collaborative program with the Australian Maritime College (AMC) as part of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree.
The maritime engineering pathway begins with two years at AUT before transitioning to AMC in Tasmania for the concluding two years, where students can focus on marine and offshore engineering, naval architecture, or ocean engineering. This unique program stands alone in New Zealand's educational offerings.
This specialization is exclusively available to New Zealand citizens. While studying in Australia, participants must comply with local visa regulations and tuition fees based on their citizenship and residency. New Zealand nationals enjoy equivalent study rights to Australian permanent residents. Many qualify for StudyLink student loans, though individual eligibility should be verified directly.
The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) equips students for successful engineering careers. Recognized by Engineering New Zealand and aligned with the Washington Accord, this qualification carries global professional standing.
Engineers tackle critical modern challenges including clean water access, sustainable energy solutions, waste processing, recycling initiatives, and environmental concerns. The degree curriculum develops crucial professional competencies in system modeling, analysis, prediction, and monitoring.
Practical learning occurs through engineering projects and hands-on courses that reinforce classroom theory. Strategic industry collaborations with leading firms like Fisher & Paykel, Beca, Opus, Spark, and Contact Energy provide valuable real-world experience integrated into the academic program.
