Our Bachelor of Music program equips you with comprehensive skills to become a versatile professional musician. Designed for teamwork, you'll master core competencies through collaborative group projects and classes that reflect real-world music industry scenarios.

Over 50% of the curriculum focuses on hands-on learning - a greater emphasis than most New Zealand music programs. This includes scheduled rehearsals, live demonstrations, and multiple performance chances like concerts and gigs alongside peers and instructors. With this practical approach, you'll be making music from your very first day at Ara.

The degree features three specialization tracks: Music Composition, Performance, and Production. This structure lets you focus on your preferred discipline while collaborating with students from other pathways. Your final year culminates in a custom capstone project (potentially including an industry placement) with expert faculty guidance.

Ara's teaching faculty consists of active professional musicians who perform, compose, and record nationwide - from the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra to popular bands like Salmonella Dub and beyond.
