To earn a PhD, students must produce a substantial and novel addition to their field through one of these options, each amounting to 70,000–100,000 words: a traditional research thesis; a thesis incorporating published papers; or a creative output like an artwork or design project paired with an analytical exegesis. Doctoral researchers must demonstrate the ability to perform highly original, quality investigations; independently plan, execute, and finalize a research endeavor; gain deep theoretical and methodological expertise in their specialization; and effectively communicate their findings to appropriate audiences.
