To earn a PhD, students must produce a substantial and novel addition to their field through one of these options, each comparable to 70,000–100,000 words: a traditional research dissertation; a combined dissertation incorporating published papers; or a creative output like an artwork or design project paired with an analytical exegesis. Doctoral researchers must perform highly original, quality investigations; autonomously plan, execute, and finalize their study; gain thorough expertise in their subject and methodologies; and effectively communicate their findings to appropriate audiences.
