To earn a PhD, students must produce a substantial and novel addition to their field through one of these options, each amounting to 70,000–100,000 words: a traditional research thesis; a thesis incorporating published papers; or a creative output like an artwork or design project paired with an analytical exegesis. Doctoral researchers must demonstrate the ability to perform highly original investigations, autonomously plan and execute their study, gain deep methodological expertise, and effectively communicate their findings to appropriate audiences.
