To earn a PhD, students must produce a substantial and novel addition to their field through one of these options, each comparable to 70,000–100,000 words: a traditional research thesis; a thesis incorporating published papers; or a creative output (like an artwork or design) paired with an analytical exegesis. Doctoral researchers must demonstrate autonomous work by designing, executing, and finishing an original investigation; acquire deep expertise in their subject and methodologies; and effectively convey their findings to appropriate audiences.
