This field of study at the School boasts growing research initiatives, with postgraduate candidates (both PhD and MSc) and postdoctoral fellows regularly participating in joint ventures alongside academics from University of Galway, other Irish institutions, and international partners.
This emerging discipline focuses on computational and statistical approaches for processing extensive biomolecular datasets. Given its interdisciplinary nature, bioinformatics may attract students from diverse backgrounds such as molecular life sciences (including biochemistry), chemistry, physics, engineering, statistics, or mathematics. Ongoing projects encompass viral evolution modeling, identifying human genetic variations influencing gene expression or RNA splicing, along with genome informatics research involving algorithm development and functional genomics/epigenomics studies.
To be eligible to enter on a programme of study and research for the degree of PhD you must have reached a high honours standard at the examination for the primary degree or presented such evidence as will satisfy the Head of School and the College of your fitness.
